Lots of Longhouses

This week we have been learning a bit more about Viking life – in particular Viking Longhouses and where they lived.  We learned that the houses were long and only had one room in them.  The roof was very peaked and hung over the sides of the house so the water didn’t soak into the walls.  Some longhouses would have beds in them but the animals slept inside in the winter.  The houses had no windows and only one small door so they were quite smoky (and probably smelly we decided!). 

Miss Shearer gave us a challenge of creating a Viking Longhouse in small groups.  She provided us with junk and clay and told us we had 3 hours to create our houses in.  Eileen also very kindly took in some hay for us to use for our roofs.  We have used half of our time so far and are well on with our models.  We’re letting them dry out over the weekend so we can add any details to them next week.  Here some pictures of our progress.

Dance Mat Typing

This week at school we have been busy typing up and redrafting a story we wrote a few weeks ago.  When we started to type we realised that we were a bit rusty on our touch typing skills which slowed us down when typing our story!  We did some practice by using the ‘Dance Mat Typing’ Game which we find tricky but it does help us.  Here is the link to the game to have a try at home!  Mums and Dads can have a go as well and see how good they are at touch typing!

Super Sandwiches

Today we were learning about writing a set of instructions.  To help us with this Miss Shearer thought it would be a good idea to actually make a sandwich then write the instructions so that we could think exactly what steps needed to be put into our instructions. 

Although we knew how to make a sandwich it was good to go through the exact steps and we could be sure we were writing an accurate set for someone else to follow.

Our instructions were very thorough and we were pleased with how they turned out.  Plus we got a really tasty sandwich for our hard work!!

Friday Dancing

We are very lucky in Primary 5 to have the opportunity to take part in a new Dancing Activity Group on a Friday Afternoon.  We had our first session this week and it was great fun.  We met our Dance Leaders – Shannon and Aisling and got a feel for what we will be doing each week.  We did some warm ups, played a game and then began to learn some dance moves – it was great fun!  We’re already looking forward to next week.

Our First Week Back

We’re back into Primary 5 with a bang after New Year!  We have been focussing on getting back into our routines after the holidays and finishing off some things we started before the holidays. 

In maths this week we have been working on measuring.  We had a few measuring challenges where we had to measure the gym hall, corridors and tables and chairs in the classroom!  We have also been working on our understanding of the link between measurements and how we can convert millimetres into centimetres, centimetres into metres and meters into kilometres.  It’s been quite difficult but we are developing our understanding of this.

We have finished off our changing materials topic by working on separation.  At the beginning of the week we were given the challenge of separating out a variety of solid materials.  We used different methods such as sieving or using a colander to separate them or sometimes we were able to use our hands to pick the larger items from the beaker. 

 

We also had a go at separating a liquid – ink.  We learned how to do an experiment called ‘chromatography’ where we used filter paper and water to see the different colours which made up the ink.  It was very interesting and we enjoyed looking at the colour trails and the different patterns the ink made on the filter paper. 

 

We have enjoyed the science aspect of our materials topic and carrying out lots of different experiments.

What a great term we’ve had in P5.  Busy but great!  The main highlight is of course Panto Pandemonium but we’ve done lots of great project work, writing and maths as well!  We finished off the term by taking some ‘Photobooth’ photos with some props Miss Kelday had and we thought we would share them with you as a Christmas treat!
