P6 Hoy Trip 2016 Canoeing

              Canoeing

Whilst in Hoy, p6 have done a variety of activities. One of those activities was canoeing.

So we split off into two groups, one went gorge walking and the other went canoeing. I was in the canoeing team .The instructor Kate R showed us what to do and once we were confident enough, we got in our canoe . The boys [Dylan, Owen, Mr Cowan] sped off super quickly. They were pro and the girls [Zoe, Abi and Lucy] were pretty good too. But then there were me[Nell] and Eileen and we nearly fell in about five times. It was great fun.

Coasteering

 When we got from the hostel to long hope we got given a wet suit, wet socks, wet gloves and a helmet. We got changed and started to walk to the beach. When we got to the beach, Chris went through some of the safe jumps to get into the water. Chris jumped in first then Ruben,  Aiden,  Dylan & then Owen. Then we had to swim through lots of seaweed to get to a rock so we could climb up it. Chris climbed the rock first then Ruben zoomed up it so quick he was up there in seconds then Owen found a different way up then Aiden just went up the same way as Owen went.  Dylan tried and tried but he could not get up it, so he had to swim around the rock where we were. Next we swam round to a big rock that you can jump off, it was really fun. Then we went in a cave that Chris didn't even know about so Chris said go in. We had to swim in it at the start of the cave but after a while we had to walk in the pitch black to find the end of the cave. Eventually, Chris found the end of the cave and said for us to walk back out.

BUSHCRAFT IN HOY

In Hoy, p6 did bush-craft. Group 1 did shelter building while group 2 learnt how to make a camp fire.







 P6 have learnt that it is quite tricky and dangerous to make a camp fire because you have to gather lots of dry sticks. When we got the fire going we took out marshmallows and toasted them over the fire.

  






When we were making shelters, it was hard and we had to work as a team to get huge, heavy logs to were we were building our shelter. We used leafs, logs and trees.

Primary 6 Hoy Trip 2016 Lymess Museum

On Thursday the  16th of June, primary six  went to the Lyness museum  and we went on a hunt round the museum for different facts and in the museum there were some really cool rooms like the oil tank, and the pump room . Some of the facts we found out are that woman used to make steel circles to use as protective fencing and the air raid shelter is made out of  concrete and metal. We saw an old railway, a boat repair building and the old oil tank. That was the tour of the museum thank you for reading.

Are stay in hoy hostal!!

The place that we stayed at in Hoy was the Hoy hostel. It was about a ten minute walk up the hill from the boat.

When we got there it looked really small but the inside was huge.After we put our bags by the hall wall and got used to our   surroundings  we got to know the staff. They all are really nice. 

We got into gropes of 7. One grope went on a tour and my group went to get kit then we switched. We got shown our rooms. Me, Zoe, Lucy and Leigha got the disabled room which meant we got the biggest room.

It was really fun. I wish i could do it once more.

A Burns Supper for Lunch.

Last week Stromness Primary were treated to some traditional Burns night festivities. Once we'd taken our seats a haggis at lunch, a haggis was paraded into the dinning room by the primary 5s with a piper leading the way on bagpipes.

After we were read some Burns poetry and joined in a toast to the haggis, we tucked into some mince, tatties and clapshot, with haggis  for those who fancied it.

Making light of our topic

Well, we've been back almost 3 weeks and once again are all settled in. Our topic for the first half  of the term is light and sound.
So far, we've been mostly looking at light, doing experiments with, mirrors, torches and colour.

Here we are, using some inventions of our own to see how mirrors help us see over obstacles.

                                                                                                                                                    

We also looked at periscopes to learn how light travels and reflects off of mirrors. 

From reflecting light we moved onto looking at colour. We broke white light into different colours by refracting and dispersing light with a prism, and and then put it back into white again with our colour spinners.
